Attendance will be taken in every class every day. Students who have no absences and no tardies will earn perfect attendance awards at the end of the year. Late arrivals or early departures due to medical appointments do impact Perfect Attendance.
Regular attendance and punctuality are necessary for success in school. If a child is absent, please email the teacher and click here to report the absence before 9:00 AM. The child will need a note from the parent that states the reason for the absence when the child returns to school. Medical documentation may be necessary, so please provide doctors/dentists notes as appropriate. Students must be present at school for a minimum of four hours for a day to count as a half-day of attendance. Please discuss the need for any prolonged absence with the teacher, the school nurse, and the principal.
Each student must attend classes for a minimum of 90% of the attendance days of a given school year in order to be promoted to the following grade level. Student absences are reported on all progress reports and on report cards. Additional written notification will be sent to parents/guardians of a student whose continued absences endanger the student's progress/promotion. If a student misses more than 18 days of a given school year, he/she may be required: to repeat the grade, to attend summer school, or to arrange for summer tutoring in order to make up for the missed days to reach the 90% attendance requirement. A summer requirement would be completed at the parents’ expense and required documentation would need to be submitted prior to the beginning of the school year.
All students who need to take any type of medication while at school MUST have a Medication Permission Form filled out and on file in the Clinic. This form must be received in the Saint Paul Clinic prior to any medication being administered.
Use of Sunscreen (Amended 8/28/12)
Sunscreens are regulated by the FDA and are to be treated at school like any other medication, with the appropriate medication permission form on file in the school office.
When the temperature and/or wind chill is below 35 degrees F, the children should be kept indoors for PE and recess. Cold weather will also result in cancellation of the 8th grade Courtyard lunch privilege. When the temperature is above 35 degrees F, the children should be properly dressed for outdoor activity. Students need to be prepared during the cold months; it is acceptable to leave a coat at school so that students have a coat if needed for going outside during cold weather.
Heat Index of 105 or higher – NO outside activity
Heat Index of 100-104 – NO recess or outside PE
Heat Index of less than 100 – usual activity
If you would like your child to remain indoors during an Orange Day, please write a note to be kept on file in the Saint Paul Clinic, and we will keep them indoors every Orange Day.
Note: If the afternoon heat index is anticipated to reach 105, but the AM temperature or heat index is still acceptable, early morning outdoor activity will be allowed.
