For the first time in SPCCS history, the sport of archery has come to our school for grades 4 through 8. With a centuries-long history, the dignified, disciplined sport provides a number of benefits to youth archers. According the to the National Field Archery Association, archery helps stamina, mental toughness, improves hand-eye coordination, teaches goal setting, teamwork and sportsmanship, as well as the importance of safety, and most of all, it's fun. It's one of the few sports that is a form of exercise as well as a form of relaxation!
Did you know there are college scholarships available for students of archery? Archery is one of the oldest sports and requires precision, control, and determination. However, it is not an official sport of the NCAA or NAIA. Back in the Stone Age, the archer’s bow and arrow was a useful tool for hunters and in combat. Target archery became an official Olympic sport in the early 1900’s. Many scholarship providers offer funding based on the archer's skill set and on competition. At the highest competition level, archers walk the equivalent of five miles, carrying heavy loads during a day’s event. Prevention magazine says drawing a bow burns about 140 calories per half-hour, the same as walking at a brisk, 3.5-mph pace.
Our program follow the guidelines and training material of the National Archery in Schools Program. The NASP is an in-school program aimed at improving educational performance among students in grades 4 through 12. And through it, students learn focus, self-control, discipline, patience, and the life lessons required to be successful in the classroom and in life.
