Welcome to English. I absolutely love teaching sixth grade students and observing their growth throughout the middle school years!
Sixth grade students need to keep their three specific folders organized: English folder, DLP folder, and writing folder. Uncompleted work or assignments that need to be evaluated should be placed in the left pocket; completed or graded work will be moved to the right pocket of the yellow folder.
Sixth grade focus for first half of quarter: kinds of sentences, complete subject/complete predicate, simple subject/simple predicate, imperative sentences, interrogative sentences, compound subjects, compound predicates, conjunctions, and diagramming basics as well as writing.
Sixth grade focus for second half of first quarter will be unit 3 verbs!
Sixth grade students will outline all 7 units of grammar before studying the chapter. Outlines will be taught in class, samples will be provided, and a rubric will be administered.
Students are instructed to write the homework assignment in their spirals as it is assigned aloud in class. ( atop the page) Assigned homework is given at the END of the class and is DEPENDENT upon students' comprehension and progression of the day's lesson.
Where can students locate assignments? Mrs. A's dry eraser board lists all English assignments; housekeeping is done at each day's end to remind students of ALL subjects assignments, projects, and homework. Online calendars will have major tests, quizzes, and projects posted each week.
I am available most days from 12:10-1:00 for tutoring or make up testing; if my large sun hat is posted, students know that I'm available that day. It is the student's responsibility to see me for make up work due to absences and to communicate with me regarding the make up work or test. Any worksheets distributed that day will have the student's name and date posted; students KNOW these can be found on the large clips on my classroom frig!
CORRECTIONS on SPELL TESTS- Students who score below a 70 on a spell test may write each word three times each with a grade level sentence as well. The student can then turn in the corrections work and the test for a passing grade of 70.
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday- grammar days and practice homework; spelling tests on Mondays
Thursday- vocabulary day
Friday- DEW Day- Drop Everything and Write
